Brainerd Service Projects
We were very proud of our staff and students as they participated in the upcoming Service Learning Projects during the 2016-2017 school year.
Turkey Trot - John Brainerd's students will take time to reflect on what they were thankful for during our Turkey Trot presentation. They will enjoy a quick trot to display Turkey Disguise posters. Spare change will be collected for the MHTEA's Scholarship Fund.
West Jersey Volunteers for Animals - The entire Pre-K grade level will work together to help donate a variety of items to the local animal rescue called West Jersey Volunteers for Animals. This is a rescue where cats and dogs are fostered until there are homes that are found for them. West Jersey is always in need of donations for their animals because taking care of a pet is extremely expensive down to items they need and medical bills they have. The volunteers at West Jersey open their homes up to these abandoned animals and the students and staff members in pre-k bring in money, cat/dog food, treats, blankets, beds, cleaning supplies and much more to help the volunteers care for these pets. As a celebration, West Jersey Volunteers for Animals comes in with a dog to teach the students all about how to approach an animal appropriately, how to take care of an animal and also shows the students different tricks the dog can do. The students always have a blast meeting one of the rescue dogs that West Jersey brings in!
JDRF - Mrs. Arce (preschool teacher) and Mrs. Iannelli (2nd grade teacher) both will be organizing a school wide service learning project this year with JDRF (juvenile diabetes research foundation). JDRF is an organization that helps improve Type 1 diabetes across the world. The students at Brainerd have been working hard for the last 3 years by selling sneakers for JDRF and by participating in a grade level competition where they bring in loose change during lunch. Along with the students working hard, the staff members also work hard by raising funds for JDRF where they pay $5.00 a week to wear jeans on Fridays. Last year, Brainerd raised over $2,500.00 and got to silly string Mr. Hammell and Mr. Convery after they celebrated with a school walk around the fields! We can’t wait for another successful year to help a great cause!
Community and Military Appreciation - The First Grade team is committed to instilling the importance of community in all of our students. We study all types of community members including leaders, helpers, and everyday citizens. We explore the different occupations that keep communities running such as police officers, firefighters, postal workers, and healthcare providers. We discuss the importance of being thankful for all of those in our community that work hard to make Mt. Holly, New Jersey, and The United States of America a great place to live. In an effort to demonstrate our appreciation for our happy community, we take time to thank those in our community that serve in the armed forces. As a culmination of our community study, the First Grade students put on a Military Appreciation Assembly for our troops. Throughout the year, students learn patriotic songs to perform at the assembly. Students bring in pictures of military friends and family members that we display in a slideshow during the assembly. Volunteers from the honor guard come to present the colors and teach our students about what life is like in the different branches of the military. In addition to the beautiful ceremony, the First Grade provides a stars and stripes breakfast for the military personnel. This momentous event evokes a tremendous amount of pride in our students' ability to thank our armed forces. We look forward to keeping this valued tradition for many years to come!
