The state of New Jersey has adopted the Next Generation Science Standards, a standards document generated by a consortium of state science leaders and written based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education, which was drafted by experts in the science education world.
New Jersey has planned for a tiered approach to curriculum implementation and standards alignment.
- For September 2016, grades 6-12 are expected to have aligned program to the NGSS.
- For September 2017, grades K-5 are expected to have aligned program to the NGSS.
The NGSS represents a shift in curriculum to a focus on:
- Explanatory Ideas
- Science Practices
- Cross-Cutting Concepts
The NGSS are clearly connected with the Common Core State Standards.
Engineering has also been integrated directly into the standards.
Expectations for science instruction will change to an emphasis on depth and practices, grounded in inquiry, modeling and experimentation - all with an engineering feel.
